I’ve learned very quickly photographing family sessions that you can’t force a moment. You can try to get the quiet, still moments by asking that from the child but I have found that the best way to photograph families is to let the child lead.
Some children are very approachable and sociable and others are more shy and reserved. Both can be photographed, you just have to let them lead on their own.
If a child wants to take your hand and lead you to the ocean to splash in the water, take their hand and I’ll photograph as you wade in the water. If the child wants to snuggle and stay close to you then let’s pop a squat in the field so I can get you and your little one being still and comforting.
I will follow you and your child’s lead calmly and gently with a non forceful approach. I want the experience of our time together to be easy going and enjoyable.
I love the idea of capturing families in the most organic way. Whether that be in their backyard playing on the slip n’ slide or photographing the new mom as she snuggles her newborn, kissing her baby’s fingers and toes.
There’s just something about the timelessness of a tangible photograph and how images can pause a moment in time for years to come. I value the beauty in a family coming as they are, to be as they are and document them in their natural element…Your “This Is Us” story.
